We spend days and weeks even months planning these events. Why when we go to purchase a cake do we allow ourselves to be limited by a laminated notebook page that details our options?
It recently ocurred to me that three things are missing from the current bakery protocol. The first is choice- the option to choose from more than the standard three or four types of cake- or the option to order cakes that are appropriately sensitive to the dietary needs of my family and guests. The second thing I realized is that presentation is lacking. I am tired of seeing a standard cake. I want my cake presented in a new way. Finally, I thought...when I am planning a celebration, I put my heart into it. I want every detail of my party to be bourne from the thoughtfulness that went into the planning and anticipation.
When was the last time you ordered from a bakery and felt like the person who was making your cake felt humbled to be participating in your special day?
After figuring out what was missing from the status quo...and with a little more prodding from my kids, I decided that now was the time for me to start baking as a business.
Why only cupcakes? I LIKE them. There is no envying the cousin next to you for his larger slice of cake. And I happen to think that the proportion of frosting to cake is perfect. Cupcakes are complete by themselves and grand in a grouping.

Sweet Grace was a long time in the making. For the past 17 years friends and family have been telling me that I should have a business...I guess I just wasn't ready.
I first started baking when I was very young with my Grandmother and my Mom. I can remember watching with keen enthusiasm as my Mother made her midnight chocolate cake. These women made unbelievably yummy cakes...but well, there was no denying they looked homemade.
Whenever we were invited to parties where there were bakery cakes I was awed by the perfect little rosebuds and loopy script...but I always felt disppointed by the taste.
Why couldn't cakes be lovely and scrumptious? Thankfully, over time many bakeries began to offer taste and beauty. But something was still missing.
The times in our lives we devote to celebration are rare and special. They are isolated moments when we allow ourselves to outwardly express joy and to savor with appreciation our friends and family. Cake is almost always an integral part of these celebrations. Cake is festive and decorative. Its sweetness is an indulgence that enhances and elevates the lightness of the occasion.
